L'episodio racconta la visita degli ambasciatori greci alla corte di Gelone, tiranno di Siracusa, che giunsero in Sicilia per chiedere il suo aiuto contro l'imminente attacco dei persiani. Un riesame del dialogo tra gli ambasciatori e il siracusano permette una reinterpretazione della frase finale con cui Gelone congeda gli ambasciatori greci, diversa da quella che si ritrova nei commenti ad Erodoto. This article aims at exploring the Homeric gods’ sensitivity to a particular kind of indig- nation that is expressed in the Homeric po- ems by the term nemesis and by the verbal forms arising from it. My purpose is to an- alyse the passages that allow us to establish the causes of divine nemesis towards the mortals and the gods themselves, as well as their effects. This survey also represents an opportunity for investigating the relation between the attribution of emotions to the Greek gods and the anthropomorphic repre- sentation of the divine.

Si prendono in esame le uniche tre iscrizioni in cui si trovano riferimenti allo sfruttamento del "sentimento" della parentela etnica nei rapporti interstatali tra città siceliote e poleis greche. Si tratta di documenti che attestano la partecipazione rispettivamente di Siracusa alle feste panelleniche in onore di Artemide Leukophryene di Magnesia sul Meandro, in Asia Minore, e di Cos e Camarina alle feste panelleniche in onore di Asclepio a Cos. In the Third book of his Bibliotheca, Diodorus Siculus includes an account of the Egyptian gold mines and describes the terrible living conditions of the slaves who are exploited to extract the metal. In this regard, Diodorus’ source is the historian Agatharchides of Cnidus, whose account is handed down by the Byzantine writer Photius. The comparison between the two texts allows scholars to highlight the different historical perspective of Diodorus, which privileges a worldview dominated by philanthropy and compassion for the most peripheral humanity.
